Get some answers to the most frequent questions we hear in the Online RN-BSN program at Utah Tech University.
When does the program start?
The RN-BSN Program has six start dates throughout the year, and classes are taught on the block (every 7 weeks). In the 2023-2024 Academic Year, the following dates mark the beginning of class:
- August 21, 2023
- October 16, 2023
- January 8, 2024
- March 4, 2024
- May 13, 2024
- June 24, 2024
How long does the degree take to complete?
The RN-BSN is fully flexible to your schedule. There are roughly 10 classes or 37 credits, depending on any previous coursework you transfer in. You can study full time, part time, or take a semester off if need be. The majority of our students continue to work full time, and the average time to completion is three semesters.
How do my GE requirements work?
Students must have completed their AAS, AS, AA, BA, BS or certificate of completion from a Registered Nurse Associate Degree Program, and must show their RN license by the beginning of the second semester. Depending on their prior institution and type of degree, students are able to transfer in credit or otherwise receive credit for prior learning.
The RN to BSN program consists of 25 core credits and 12 elective credits, for a total of 37 credits or 10 classes. Some students may lack required GE courses as part of the program, and will need to complete them as part of their study. To graduate, students must have a total of 40 credits of upper division work, 30 of which are completed at Utah Tech. Talk to our Online Programs Advisor for more information about your personal path to graduation.
Who do I talk to if I have questions?
Reach out to Jake Richins, our Online Program Advisor with questions about the RN to BSN program. He can be reached at (435) 879-4519.
Can I finish this program even if I work?
Of course! Most of our students continue to work full time during the program, and many have families or other domestic responsibilities. Because the RN to BSN is completely online and asynchronous, you can study whenever and wherever is most convenient for you.
Can I study at my own pace?
As an RN to BSN student, you can tailor your schedule however you want. You can study full time, part time, or take a break if needed. The classes are asynchronous, meaning you can study any time of day or night—whatever is most convenient.
Do I ever have to come to campus?
Nope! All of your coursework will be completed online, and any practice hours or class projects you need to complete can be done where you are at. There is no reason you will ever have to come to campus.
I live outside the state of Utah—can I study in this program?
You bet! Our online program tuition is priced the same for residents (inside the state of Utah) and non-residents, our program is nationally accredited by ACEN, and we welcome students from any location.
Do I need clinical or practicum hours?
As part of Nursing 4020 (Community, Public, and Global Health Nursing) and Nursing 4600 (Professional Nursing Synthesis), students have practice hours and projects to complete. They can be done in your place of employment or in your community under the supervision or your supervisor. You won’t ever have to come to campus.
Are there other fees associated with the program?
Tuition for the RN to BSN program is $255 per credit—a flat fee for your coursework. In addition to tuition, students can expect these costs:
- A $35 application fee to Utah Tech University, but no additional fee to apply to the RN to BSN program. If you have concerns about the application fee, please contact our Online Programs Advisor to discuss any questions or issues.
- There are no additional background tests or drug screenings.
- Some of your courses will require books, but there are options for students—book purchases, book rentals, ebooks, etc. In 2022, the rough cost for purchasing used textbooks was $330.
I work for Intermountain Healthcare—can I get tuition reimbursement?
Yes! In partnership with Acadeum and InStride, Intermountain Healthcare is now offering tuition reimbursement of up to $5,250 per year at Utah Tech University. That effectively covers tuition for the program. Interested students should visit the internal Intermountain Healthcare page dedicated to further education or speak with their HR department about the tuition reimbursement program.
Are there other financial aid options?
We don’t currently have specific scholarship funds for this online program, but financial aid is always available in the form of student loans. Visit our Financial Aid site to learn more.
