Why Come Back to School?

Feeling a little unsure? Listen to what your peers have to say about Utah Tech's RN-BSN program.

Susan Leatham: But I'm already a good nurse!

Why come back to school to earn your BSN, especially if you’re already a successful nurse? Listen to Susan Leatham talk about her experience coming back to earn her degree after years (and still working) as a nurse.

Susan's Story

Larson Beatty: The time will pass anyway

What semester and year did you graduate from your RN-BSN program?
Summer 2025
Where are you currently working?
I currently hold several positions as a Registered Nurse, with my most recent role at St. George Regional Hospital and the Utah Tech University Nursing Department. I work with a diverse population, providing bedside care in the surgical unit, outpatient nursing at a plasma collection center, and support for brand-new nursing students. I definitely stay busy!
What prompted you to complete your BSN degree online?
I chose to pursue my BNS online because of its flexibility, asynchronous format, and affordability. I explored several options for completing my education, but since I work between 60 to 70 hours a week, attending an in-person BSN program was not feasible for me. Therefore, Utah Tech’s RN-BSN online program was the best fit for my needs.
Do you feel like your UT nursing education adequately prepared you to get where you are today?
Utah Tech’s RN-BSN program fully prepared me for my current work. This program emphasizes the broader aspects of nursing rather than just basic skills. As a result, I have developed a personal nursing philosophy, gained a global perspective on patient assessment, and acquired cultural competence. Additionally, I have learned important details about patient insurance and costs. I believe these elements distinguish Utah Tech’s program from those of other universities.
Did you have a favorite aspect about the program or a favorite experience?
My two favorite aspects of the RN-BSN program, as well as Utah Tech in general, are the faculty and the opportunity to complete the program quickly. I have been fortunate to develop several friendships and professional relationships with the faculty at Utah Tech, and I can confidently say they genuinely want you to succeed.
Another highlight of the program is the flexibility it offers; I chose to complete my degree in just two semesters, while others may opt to take one class at a time. Regardless of the path chosen, it is entirely possible to earn your degree while also building a supportive network that will help you achieve your goals.
Do you have plans for your professional future?
I plan to continue my education by pursuing my DNP-NA and becoming a CRNA. In the meantime, I might also consider enrolling in Utah Tech’s online MSN degree program, with the goal of teaching at Utah Tech. Regardless of the path I choose, I am committed to serving and making a positive impact in the world, whether through bedside nursing or by influencing the next generation of nurses.
Do you have any words of wisdom you would like to share with someone applying to your program right now or thinking about applying?
If you are uncertain about enrolling in or completing your BSN, remember this phrase: “The time will pass anyway.” Whether it takes you 1 year or 6 years, time will move forward, so why not invest in yourself? I can assure you that you won’t regret finishing your BSN, as it opens many new opportunities.
