Ready to Launch: Online Course Toolkit

A step-by-step guide to prepare and publish your online course at Utah Tech University

Just like students arriving at a physical classroom, online learners need to know they are in the right place, what is expected of them, and that their instructor is present and prepared.

When a course is unpublished or empty, students experience confusion, frustration, and even doubt about the value of their education. Their first impression–what we call perceived efficacy– sets the tone for the entire semester.

This Ready to Launch Toolkit will walk you through what to do, when to do it, and where to get help. Whether you are teaching online for the first time or have years of experience, our goal is simple: help every online instructor feel confident, prepared, and supported for a strong course launch

Important Dates to Remember:

  • If you do a video, Keep the video short (1 – 2 minutes).

Launch and Liftoff

Publish Your Course

  • Publish individual modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions that you want students to access.
  • Then, publish the entire course so students can enter the course shell.
    Important Notes:

    • If the course is published but individual items are not, students will still not see them.
    • Students can view the course once published, but cannot participate until the term officially starts.

Set Up Your Communication Plan

Notification Preferences

  • Update your Canvas Notification Settings to receive alerts about student messages via text or email.
  • Note: Replying to Canvas messages from your email will not include attachments. Use the Canvas Inbox to send files.

Welcome Your Students

  • Write a Welcome Announcement in Canvas and schedule it to post on the first day of class.
  • Send a welcome email from Canvas Inbox or your UT email address a few days before class starts, encouraging students to log in as soon as they can.
